Please help me. I can't use computer name or host name in my LAN

I have a mandrake 10.0. I used it as MySQL server. I don't have problem with it when it comes to network coz by just providing hostname (dbserver) the server can be pinged (from other pc) by ping dbserver, can connect to MySQL using hostname too and even FTP by ftp dbserver. Now, I installed a server using Fedora Core 5 and will be used it for MySQL and FTP server instead of mandrake 10.0. I set the hostname as dbftpserver. My problem is can't ping it using hostname (dbftpserver) and also from ubuntu i can't ping other pc using hostname or pc name (Windows XP). Anybody here knows how to fix it? Please help me.

Consider this. All name based networking happens as a result of a Domain Name Server(DNS) or an /etc/hosts file having been configured to translate a NAME into an IP address. Someone must have setup/configured each of your existing machines to enable this function - Was that person You? if not, go find them again!

To help there is a collection of information I (or anyone else) will need to know.
A. Is this your local network and is it behind a firewall from the internet ?
B. Post a list of the machine names, ip-address, dhcp-assigned or static.
C. Post the contents of /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf for each machine.
D. From each machine ping the other named machines: post the result.

My guess is we may only need to update the /etc/hosts file on the fedora and other machines. By adding this new machine.

Minor Guidelines:
A. Servers should be statically assigned or use the fixed-address feature using dhcpd.
B. A local dns server would be ideal for this issue.
C. Network planning and prep should be done before you find yourself in situation like this.

Anyway, we can help. Post the info and lets get started.

both Linux and Windows have hosts files that can be edited to add the name ip combo.

Question I have is whether or not your old mysqldb server is in the same workgroup / domain as the windows (in other words do you have samba running). You would have to also install it under FC5. I wrote a samba how to. Search for my name it should point you in the right direction.
