Ethernet card not working, need serious help

Hi friends
I recently bought a Compaq presario V2281 notebook and installed a Fedora core 4 on it but my lan card is not working
I receive this mesage: SIOCSIFFLAGS invalid arguement failed to bring up eth0. Need help desparetely.
Any help will be appreciated Thankyou bye
