New to the unix community

I'm a Networking major and I'm currently taking a linux using Unix class. I downloaded Fedora 4 and installed it on my dell notebook. It dosen't recognize my video, sound or nic card. Also there are no screensavers. Dell dose not support this so I'm on my own. Dose anybody know how to correct this problem,

I tried the Knoppix live and it dose recongize everything but its load times are very slow.

Run "lspci" as root to see details of your video, sound, and nic hardware. Then check the forum or the Web to see if people has already found out how to solve your problem. Chances are such information is already available.

Usually you don't need a specific video driver under Linux, the generic one works well enough.

You cannot run your screensaver as root.

Try finding out if others have already figured out how to make a certain piece of hardware to work with FC4 on the Web. Also you may have to edit xorg.conf by hand to set the display to a higher resolution.
