Display Problem: Monitor Out of range, blank screen in Graphics mode

Fedora 4. My screen goes blank going into graphics mode. I tried hooking my laptop up to a monitor and the monitor says "Out of Range". Ive tried booting with "resolution=SIZExSIZE", and a few other options ("nofb", etc). This seems like a common issue, but i dont see any clear trouble shooting methods or answers anywhere.

what does X log and xorg.conf says about your monitor and display type?
maybe you can post a little of them...
