FC3, modified initrd.img

we PXE install 40+ machines at a time. currently we have to use FC3 on these machines. changing SATA mode to combination is not an option. so we have modified the initrd.img file just like we have in the past when Dell would change devices for the E1000. currently, our modified initrd.img loads via PXE and formats the disk as expected, but after formatting, it never mounts the new areas for install. so after the "..checking packages selected for install.." we get an error that we need xxxxMB in /, because it skips the mount part. has anyone successfully modified the initrd to add/remove devices? again, combination mode WILL NOT work for us because the drives will be too slow.

thanks
