FC only officially supports New World Macs. Old World Macs are harder to set up; the best distros for them are Debian and Yellow Dog 3. But PowerBook 1400 is also a Nubus computer (i.e. it doesn't have Open Firmware). If Yellow Dog says that it won't work on this computer, don't even think about using FC, which is geared toward newer computers. You need to figure out how to use the Linux Nubus kernel; there are some useful links on that web page. Here's a guide for installing an older version of Debian on Powerbook 1400 that might be helpful. Oh, and that 40mb of RAM might not really cut it for X.

First of all a 3gig harddrive would not have enough space to have both Mac OS and Linux. If you are planning to install just Linux it would take almost 3 gigs to install (not reccomended). Like Spoon! says, "old world macs are harder to setup." So it sounds like you have an old Powerbook and you can afford to mess with it. You can try, but not too much luck with that harddrive and amount of ram. I might have a few more suggestions If I could get the version of Mac OS if any.

To answer your very first question: I think you don't have enough RAM. The x86 installation note states tah a minimum of 64 MB is needet for text mode installation, so .....
well, I succeeded to intsall FC4 on a P133 with 48MB by using a second system to install the real distribution first, than I moved the fresh installed hard disk on the old pentium. It works no problem! ROTFL
