Startup problems

Sometimes when I start up, it'll load up, but there is no background and no desktop icons. THe gnome menu is there, along with gdesklets, but the desktop is gone (including right-clicking). WHen I try to Log Off, sometimes I can and sometimes it freezes. Rebooting usually works, but for the reboot to always work I have to do it in the console.

I'm running FC4 on a T41 IBM thinkpad.

Why does this happen?
