Java/FC3 assistance

I have tried the how-to-articles everywhere I can find it how ever- I can't install as root- and when I install as the regualr user it gets started then returns this error
UnZipSFX 5.42 of 14 January 2001, by Info-ZIP (Zip-Bugs@lists.wku.edu).
inflating: jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.rpm
error: can't create transaction lock

Done.
I was only able to get to this part as the regular usr--any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

I believe you will need to be root to install this, as rpm requires root permissions. What errors do you receive when trying to install as root? What is your working directory?

Use the "cd" command to change to the directory where the file is located.

I have tried cd cd /<usr> cd /etc/<usr> (the <usr> is the user's name- the java file is located in the home directory....all I receive from the various attempts are no such file or directory---one would think it should be very easy, but I have appraently missed something
Thanks all for the replies--I haven't given up on this venture it's just going to take me a minute or two to get it down

This is the update...I went to fedorausers.org (thanks for the links guys)---everything seemed to install nicely--but maybe because of my other attempts at installing this is the problem I receive:
root@localhost plugins]# ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln: `./libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists
[root@localhost plugins]# ln -s /usr/java/jre-1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln: `./libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists
I am still unable to see the java applets.....getting there- but further assistance is truely needed....Thanks in advance

If the file is in your home directory, After doing su, you need to cd to /home/<user>. When you become root, your working directory becomes /root (roots home directory so bash still shows "~").

Your problem with Java, is you need to put a "." at the end ot the ln command to tell it to make the link in the current directory. Make sure there is a space before the period.

Thank you 1Lazarus- I think I will try starting this over and trying again---not sure if it will install from the home directory- since this latest download was sent to /opt (recommened from fedorausers.org)--I still have the first one I did in home, so I will try and delete the one with /opt- cause placing that "." in the ln command did not give me an error.... ...again thank you for the quick response

this is is the last command:
root@localhost grobin]# rpm -Uvh jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package jre-1.5.0_04-fcs is already installed
[root@localhost grobin]# cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
[root@localhost plugins]# ln -s /usr/java/jrel.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
ln: `./libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists
[root@localhost plugins]#

still can't get the java applet to work --- I'll keep at it
