New to All This Linux Stuff

First let me say hello. Glad to be here.
I was reffered to Linux by my curiosity. I wanted to see what it was. I heard that it was good for design (I'm getting into Graphics Design and Modeling). I have searched and read a few guides but I didn't understand any of them. Is there a noob/begginners guide to installing this? Also step-by-step, how do I check the MD5 checksums
