Swap file help

Can someone help me with my swap file problem?

I have 768megs of ram and a 1gig swap file (created by auto-partitioning during the FC3 install). Now that my computer's running, the swap file is used constantly...even though I have little to nothing running (some panel applets, firefox, RedHat Network Notification Tool, and probably a couple other small programs). I can tell that the swap file is constantly used because, when I open the System Monitor, I can see that the VM size for each running process is very close (if not equal) to the overall memory used by the process (almost none of the X Server Memory is used....which I'm assuming is ram???). I also have the System Monitor applet running on the bottom toolbar and can see that there's always a system load...even though I'm not doing anything.

I'm having a problem with this because my computer lags every second or so (maybe .2 seconds??) even doing the simplest tasks....like dragging a window or scrolling down or even while typing this message. It didn't do this before, when I had installed FC3 without a swap file, so this leads me to believe it's the swap file (though I may be wrong).

My System Specs (so you understand why I think it's the swap file...I think it should be fast enough not to lag like it does).
2 x Athlon MP 1800+ (1.5Ghz each)
768megs PC2100 ram
1 40gig Maxtor; 1 80gig Seagate
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (fixed the driver problem...so this shouldn't cause the lagging)

Here are my questions:
Is there a way to make FC3 use the swap file more effentiently (so it's not constantly using it)?
If there's no way to make it more effecient, is there a way to disable it? I'm willing to lose the 1 gig of space and possibility of my system hanging on occassion (due to using too much ram) to get rid of the annoying lag. I'm really not worried about my system freezing as I haven't used more than 55% of ram (with the exception of the cache, but that should flush out of the ram when I run low, right?), according to the System Monitor applet.

I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions regarding this...it's not absolutely vital, but it is very annoying. Thanks in advance
