Package Management Confusion

Alright so my new linux box is comming on the weekend and i am downloading FC3 ISO's right now and backing up my FC2 documents. One thing is really bothering me though, and that is package management, i am really confused.

In FC2 i used APT, it worked well and never mistreated me

In FC3 it seems like apt has been almost abandoned and YUM is the main choice now, fair enough, i can adapt, i see Yum extender could possibly replace synaptic for me. Now comes the confusing part, repositories. I have been looking on your Fedora FAQ and have examined the yum.conf on there. I planned on using this conf but i hear about fedora.us not being compatable with alot of other places like dag, etc. It looks like these other places have more packages to offer me but there must be a reason you guys are recomending fedora.us in your FAQ, hence my confusion. I want to be able to install the unoffical packages like xmm-mp3, Xine, and aMule as well as my Nvida drivers. At the same time i want to keep my system up to date with the latest updates. (Something i didnt do as well as i should have in core 2)

Could someone please provide some insight on this situation? Right now on APT i am using fedora.us packages and freshrpm's on core 2, now i guess these two arnt supposed to play well togeather but i never had a problem, i guess im more of a newb at this then i thought!

Well, xmms-mp3 and xine were available from FC3 repositories last time I checked.

It really doesn't matter whether you use "yum" or "apt". The problem is once you use one or the other, to stick with it. The problem is that if you install "foo.bar-2.6" with apt, then perhaps upgrade "foo-bar" with yum, then the "yum" command might download a different version from a different repository. (depends on how you have apt and yum configured).

In the case above "apt" thinks that you have "foo-bar-2.6" installed, while the yum upgrade you did later might have "re-installed" something like "foo-bar-2.7". The two download/install methods do not keep in "sync" with each other, things will get clobbered, and depencies screwed up.

Well, at the risk of repeating myself, choose one or the other, and don't ever mix the two and you will be fine.

Apt is just as well supported in fc3 as it was in fc2.
I have yet to find a yum repository that doesn't have an apt equivalent.

Apt can be installed via yum (which is the only time I have ever used yum)
from fedora-extras I believe.

When I upgraded from fc3 I just saved my old /etc/apt/sources.list
and restored it and changed any references to "/2/" to "/3/" and "/fc2"
to "fc3".

Then you just
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

I use the ones below. Remove the 4 kde lines if you don't use kde
(I find kde out of the box on FC is not very usable so I use the
kde-redhat rpms)

# Add any local repositories here.

# Be sure to read /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mirror-select.list which has
# been automatically configured by the Fedora apt mirror selector
# Run "apt-get mirror-select" to reselect mirrors for that file.

#KDE
rpm ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt fedora/3 testing
rpm ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt fedora/all testing
rpm ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt kde-redhat/3 testing
rpm ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt kde-redhat/all testing

# Freshrpms - Ireland mirror
rpm http://ayo.ie.freshrpms.net fedora/linux/3/i386 core updates freshrpms

# DAG - Belgium mirror
rpm http://apt.sw.be fedora/3/en/i386 dag

# NewRPMS
rpm http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/ redhat/en/i386/fc3 newrpms

# Dries
rpm http://dries.studentenweb.org apt/fedora/fc3/i386 dries
