pc has slowed down on the net

My pc has gotten slow. It's only a 450 MHz pc, but my laptop with 350 MHz is faster. Both pcs have Linux-just different versions. My 450 MHz desktop is noticeably faster at opening up applications...it's just slow on the net during the same time frame and at the same sites as my 350 MHz laptop.

My 450 MHz laptop has FC3 and I've used yum often to make sure it's up to date.

Any ideas why this is??

What services are you running on your PC? How is your network setup?

Its possible that something on either your PC or Laptop is using up most of the bandwidth which is making the other connection slow. Also check /var/log/messages for any clues.

I don't think it's a bandwith thing because file downloads with wget come in at around 90 kb/sec...this is peak speed for me.

This is at the end of my /var/log/messages:

Mar 17 17:16:10 localhost login(pam_unix)[3917]: authentication failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty1 ruser= rhost= user=linuxhippy
Mar 17 17:16:12 localhost login[3917]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR linuxhippy, Authentication failure
Mar 17 17:16:20 localhost login(pam_unix)[3917]: session opened for user linuxhippy by LOGIN(uid=0)
Mar 17 17:16:20 localhost -- linuxhippy[3917]: LOGIN ON tty1 BY linuxhippy

Looks like pam had difficulty the first try, but succeeded the second time. Would pam slow my system down?

These are my processes-any that may slow down my pc on the internet?

I have 4 processes above that say this:

kdeinit: dcopserver --nosid --suicide

What's dcopserver??

I use Fluxbox primarily...sometimes KDE. I only use my pc to surf the net and check email.
