If you get a prompt on the screen, log in as root
Look for the section that says 'Screen'
mine looks like this
Viewport 0 0
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
Viewport 0 0
Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
The DefaultDepth 24
tells the conf file to go to the Display
section with Depth 24
, then the first Mode
will be loaded in my case 1280x1024
What you may want to try first is removing the 1280x1024
and see if it can boot up into the GUI this time if not then it maybe because you are trying to get too much from the graphics card in its current state.
Your graphics card maybe capable of doing better than this, but maybe limited by the driver support it has with a fresh install of FC. in this case try changing this section:
change the DefaultDepth
emacs in text mode use these key combinations
CTRL+X+S to save
CTRL+X+C to exit
then I think I would just reboot
the system to see if the changes had worked, if you do not want to reboot you can type
BUT as X has already started even in its garbled state you may get a message telling you that it has already started and you need to remove the log (sorry can remember message or name of log file)
Something along these lines will allow you to get passed this:
and then use the startx
Hope that covers it all.
You should be able to use the GUI now, your next bet would be to figure out what you need to do to get the best out of you graphics card so that you can display Fedora at the correct resolution.
