    Resolution not changed using xrandr on external monitor

    Hello.
    I have a problem.

    I have a laptop Thinkpad Edge e330 with Fedora 24 (with gnome) running. And I have a monitor Philips 196V. The monitor is connected using VGA.

    The problem is that even if I change resolution to 1366x768 on monitor, it will be reverted to basic 1024x768.

    [user01@localhost home]$ lspci -nnk | grep VGA
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09)

    Adding new resolution:

    I didn't find any problems in logs, just the resolution was changed and reverted at the same time:

    I don't understand how to fix it? It seems that my problem reproduces this http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...-my-resolution. But there's no fix.

    The monitor works well with connection to this laptop via VGA while working with windows 10, I don't think that something with VGA cable.

    Please help me.

    Re: Resolution not changed using xrandr on external monitor

    Question,

    when resizing the screen, can you modify the refresh rate also to say 25Hz or 30 Hz or maybe 50 Hz ? (instead of 60)

    Also, I recommend you download yourself another Fedora Live spin, say Xfce , or KDE, and run the live version from the USB stick to see if you can make the monitor work, without affecting your OS in the HDD.

    Re: Resolution not changed using xrandr on external monitor

    bobx001, thank you for your answer.

    What I've got.
    If I try to use 1366x768 with lower refresh rate on gnome (50, 30, 25) -- the situation as in the first post. The monitor is blinked but the resolution was rollbacked.

    When I ran a fedora spin with xfce on live cd, I could change my monitor resolution to 1366x768_60.00, it works as it should work.
    When I tried to low the refresh rate it appears that my monitor support only 60 Mhz for this resolution.

    Anyway, I would like to stay with gnome. Could anybody tell me what should I need to do to make it working on distributive with gnome?

    Re: Resolution not changed using xrandr on external monitor

    are you running gdm/gnome under wayland or X? xrandr doesn't work correctly under wayland.

    Try logging in to a gnome session using X. You can select it from the drop down menu on the login screen.

    Re: Resolution not changed using xrandr on external monitor

    DBelton, hello.

    At first, gdm was worked under wayland.
    I configured /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

    [daemon]
    # Uncoment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
    WaylandEnable=false

    After reboot I have

    [vaysman@localhost ~]$ loginctl list-sessions
    SESSION UID USER SEAT
    2 1000 user01 seat0
    c1 42 gdm seat0

    2 sessions listed.
    [user01@localhost ~]$ loginctl show-session 2 -p Type
    Type=x11
    [user01@localhost ~]$ loginctl show-session c1 -p Type
    Type=x11

    Now I tried to add new resolution 1366 768 60 to VGA as was written in the first post.
    I have the same situation.

    [vaysman@localhost ~]$ sudo xrandr --verbose --output VGA1 --mode 1368x768_60.00
    screen 0: 1368x768 361x203 mm 96.09dpi
    crtc 0: 1368x768_60.00 60.00 +0+0 "VGA1"

    The screen is blinked, and after that the resolution was rollback to 1024x768.
