I get a similar error with the 32 bit F18 installation.
For background, I am using Fedora 18 on an Asus M2N68-AM PLUS motherboard, with AMD Phenom 9600 Quad and 4 GB RAM. The kernels I have available are:
Only the last-named is usable - the two 3.8.11-200 kernels give the frozen/scrambled screen problem that I have previously reported with F17 on the same hardware. That F17 problem was suggested to be a video driver problem. It eventually disappeared with later versions of the F17 kernel.
That same problem appeared immediately I installed F18.
If I follow the steps given by Bob and Leigh, Google Earth appears to work - but only for about 10 seconds.
Using rpm -U --force does not work.
If I install the nvidia drivers with
yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686
then Google-Earth works perfectly - until I reboot. After rebooting I cannot get into any of the three kernels. However, i can get to another screen with a command prompt and login and remove the nvidia drivers to regain a usable system.
If I follow the steps suggested by debo2011 I get a crippled version of Google Earth that soon gives me a frozen/scrambled screen and a totally unresponsive system.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
I enjoy using Google Earth. If I cannot solve this problem I will go back to F17 and await F19.
I found that even kernel 3.6.10-4.fc18.i686 gave the same problem of a frozen/scrambled screen - but took a bit more time to show it.
So back to F17 with a fresh install. I had previously had a stable F17 system with the latest kernels and a usable Google Earth - but not this time. All but one of the kernels I tried gave almost immediate frozen/scrambled screens no matter what I was trying to do.
I went back to kernel 3.3.4-5.fc17.i686 and this has given no trouble after many hours of use, provided that I do not attempt to use Google Earth.
Are these problems a peculiarity of my CPU/Motherboard combination?
