Fedora 18 cannot find a network printer

I have a HP 5180 printer on a fixed IP (I also have another HP 2100 on a fixed IP).

Using Fedora 16 and 12 before that, I could find and add both printers.

With Fedora 18, I can find the 2100 printer fine and use it, but when I try to add the 5180, it says it cannot find the printer when I enter the IP address.

The printer responds to ping fine and can be found by Windows 7. The comm. port is 9100.

What can I do to try to get this printer working with Fedora 18?

Can I telnet the port and try something (print blank page)????

Have you restarted your router or modem? I had similar issue with network printer (HP Photosmart eStation) until I reset the modem.

Re: Fedora 18 cannot find a network printer

If you haven't already done this, do:
#yum install hplip*

Then do:
hp-setup

It will walk you through the rest.

Re: Fedora 18 cannot find a network printer

Many thanks Steelaworkn. Interesting that one was found before anyway, also interesting that the network auto lookup did NOT work (that was probably the reason not found before). Using MANUAL ip address and port 1 (strange as I expected port 9100) worked great.

Many Thanks.

PS - this device is LOST each time I boot the Windows 7 box and must be found again. WEIRD but OK.

Avahi is the network printer discovery daemon. Did you have it installed?

Re: Fedora 18 cannot find a network printer

Hello,
I was not able to configure the windows printer from the Gnome settings (going from User menu / System Settings / Printers ).

Related bug report from F17 still valid in F18.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805289

The smbclient for "\\server\printer" works fine and I am even able to print file from the commandline.

Workaround solution for me was to use system-config-printer .
$sudo yum install system-config-printer
$system-config-printer
"Add Printer" -> "Enter-UI" or "Windows Printer via SAMBA" -> give the url and here you go.

Best regards
