Windows Printing in Fedora 18

I can't seem to get Windows printing to work in Fedora 18.
I've enabled the smb and nmb services and they are running.
Also, I've allowed both samba and samba-client in the firewall.
But the "add printer" dialog box continues to say that it can't find
a printer. I tried entering "smb://machine/printer" of course with
the correct machine and printer entries. No luck.

Help appreciated.

Re: Windows Printing in Fedora 18

You do have the printer set up in Windows as shared?

Also, have you set the workgroup name? If not, you need to specify the workgroup name in the smb:// line

Code:
smb://workgroup/machine:port/printer
Also make sure you have the authentication details correct. You would use the windows user/password

And also, you need to be certain your firewall isn't blocking it

Re: Windows Printing in Fedora 18

Of course I have the Windows 8 box set up to share the
printer ... and have had no problem accessing it with
RHEL 6.3 or Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10. In fact, I can
access the hard drive on the Windows box and can copy files from
the Windows box to my Fedora 18 installation. So the Samba
capability is alive and well.

I just can't see the printer.

Something is going on that's very strange.

Re: Windows Printing in Fedora 18

Hello,
I was not able to configure the windows printer from the Gnome settings (going from User menu / System Settings / Printers ).

The smbclient for "\\server\printer" works fine and I am even able to print file from the commandline.

Solution for me was to use system-config-printer .
"Add Printer" -> "Enter-UI" or "Windows Printer via SAMBA" -> give the url and here you go.

Best regards
Michal Ambroz
