What is the best way to get games to work in Fedora 17?

Hi,

I am a bit old. I also have heard about wine in Fedora. My question is what is the best way to install games in Fedora?

I randomly search the internet, and I found this video of the different way of installing games using PlayOnLinux.

Is this the best way to go? What would be your opinion?

I am greatly appreciated.

PlayOnLinux would be your best bet, but I have had no luck with wine or playonlinux. I've tried to get 3 games working (Tron 2.0, FlightSimulator X demo, and World of Warcraft). The only game I got to work was WoW with regular wine and that's because I already had the files downloaded from a windows machine. I downloaded on windows and ran it under wine (wine WoW.exe) and it seemed to work okay.

For me, the best option is to just use Virtualbox. Wine has never really worked on anything I've tried. Maybe I've just been using it wrong. I say give them both a shot and see which ones you like.

Most games work with wine..of course the majority of them you will have to tweak them. Some of them have tutorials in winehq

The problem with VirtualBox for gaming is that you won't get full use of your graphics card if it's PCI-E. You need a very particular configuration to do that. I'm not up on the specifics, but it's my understanding that this is pretty difficult.

Okay. PlayOnlinx alone would not work. You need winetricks too.

You can install the same packages you need with playonlinux (directx, vb, vc, etc)

Re: What is the best way to get games to work in Fedora 17?

If i remember rightly it worked for me on cedega or something as that included the required windows components. I later got things running on plain WINE I think its just a matter of making sure all the required windows components are installed and your correctly configured (and each game needs configuring seperately sometimes I think).
It was a while ago though I worked it out by trial and error, sadly I can't remember any more clearly to be of more help.

I am checking out crossover. I heard they will give you supports even after the license is expired.
For twenty bucks (discount plan), I am okay. I am using the trial version right now, and I noticed that the software is using wine too. For such supports, I am okay.

Thanks.
