preupgrading slowly (F10 -> ...)

So I have F10 on one of my servers and it's been awhile since I last updated this server.

Fresh installs = no.

I'm going to do the preupgrade and basically update to F12 -> F14 -> ...

But I'm getting this error.

Quote:
preupgrade-main (mirrorlist)
url: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-12&arch=$basearch
now: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...12&arch=x86_64
preupgrade (mirrorlist)
url: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?path=pub/fedora/linux/releases/12/Fedora/$basearch/os
now: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...dora/x86_64/os
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: preupgrade

This could be caused by a missing network connection or a bad mirror.
Is this just a text change that I need to do?

Going to that URL just gives me an error.

Quote:
# path = pub/fedora/linux/releases/12/Fedora/x86_64/os error: invalid path

Re: preupgrading slowly (F10 -> ...)

Sometime after a Fedora release goes EOL (End Of Life), the repositories for that release are moved into the archives, making the baseurl= in the repo files point to non-existent locations. But the repo files do not use the baseurl= line (it's commented out), as it uses the mirrorlist= url's, which will work for awhile after EOF even the baseurl has been shifted to the archives.

But eventually, all the mirror sites for that release will disappear, and then you get NOTHING, except error messages. You can do a text edit to your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo files, deleting or commenting out the mirrorlist= lines and uncommenting the #baseurl= line and modifying to point to the archive locations, but....

that doesn't do anything to "fix" the now gone F14 repos, which are also EOF, though it's possible there might still be some working mirror sites for F14.

For your fedora.repo file in the [fedora] section:
Quote:
baseurl=http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/
For your fedora-updates.repo file in the [updates] section:
Quote:
baseurl=http://archive.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
In my opinion, it would be so much easier and probably a lot less time consuming to back up your sever data and then do a fresh install.

You'll have plenty of opportunity to decide otherwise during your "preupgrade > +2" attempts.

So I'm out of luck upgrading?

I can still see 13 and 14.

Well, after making the modifications to your F10 repo files as I suggested (I got confused and thought you were at F12 currently, but just re-read your post and see you're on F10), you will still probably have the problem of the upgrade not finding the F12 repositories for the same reason F10 couldn't find it's own repos. Is your goal to upgrade all the way to F17, the current latest version? I would strongly recommend backing up your important data first though, before trying any type of upgrade. It's your responsibility to safe guard your data.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Perhaps you mean you can still access the F13 and F14 repos from machines running those versions of Fedora. Yes, there could be some working mirror sites for those still lingering around. Switching to Centos6.0 (I think that's the latest version) would be even better. It has a much longer support life cycle than Fedora. Trying to upgrade your way from F10 > F17 is just fraught with so many ways to fail along the way. And besides, I thought using "preupgrade" automatically tries to take you to the latest Fedora version. But maybe I'm wrong about that, as I've never used preupgrade.

There is also the "yum" method of upgrading, but that too might fall victim to the repositories being moved to the archives. For example, going from F10 > F12:
Code:
# yum --releasver=12 update
Might work, or maybe not. Note, "--releasver" may not be the exact option syntax, I'm in W7 at the moment and can't verify.
I still say, backup your data, and do a clean install. Anything else is at your own peril. Well, for that matter, anything you do is at your own peril.

Re: preupgrading slowly (F10 -> ...)

Just backed up all my db right now. Good thing this is my personal servers and I don't have to worry about messing with other people's ****.

Time to make a move to CentOS.
