microphone doesn't work in linux skype
I run Gnome F17-32 installed from a Live CD and have a separate camera/mike. I just installed skype 4.0.0.8 and the mike fails the skype online echo/sound test. It does work in my winxp skype.
In System Settings-Sound-Input the Connector is Analog Line-In and the device is Internal Audio Analog Stereo.
In Hardware the device is Internal Audio-1 Output/1 Input-Analog Stereo Duplex and the profile is Analog Stereo Duplex.
In looking around in the forum I find references to pulseaudio; is this something necessary in my situation?
I am just lifting off the start of the learning curve; any GUI/command line help will certainly be helpful and appreciated.

Re: microphone doesn't work in linux skype
I have only run into this once. I found the solution in post number 9 of this thread on Ubuntu forums. Note that that worked for me, but is dated by now and may no longer be applicable.

Thanks for your response. It looks promising but is based on more system/command line familiarity than I have.
To clarify(down to my level <8~), where should I look for backports and pulseaudio and what is the correct terminology?
Another possible problem may be the same error I made installing printer drivers. When I installed F17 I used a name other than localhost for my box. In going through the process I didn't notice when the default location name was applied. This install used non-fedora instructions, i.e., Skype, as well. Could this cause a problem?
Regarding the learning curve, I'm not still stumbling around in the dark but I don't see much with one candle.

Re: microphone doesn't work in linux skype
Sorry, that's for Ubuntu, so don't worry about backports. The important part of that post was to get the pulse audio device chooser though looking now, I don't see it still available. Hrrm, well, see if there's anything that looks like a stereo input for the microphone. (The package was called padevchooser in older versions of Fedora). Then, if you find such a thing--it's possible that the reason it's not showing up for me is that it's integrated in later versions of the desktop, you can follow that post--that is, click the thing that links left and right microphone
channel, and pull one to the left.

Re: microphone doesn't work in linux skype
I don't see that sort of problem with skype 4.0.0.7 and it uses libasound.so .
In the options menu under sound devices I have pulse(pulse) for microphone.
In pavucontrol input tab I can see the sound gauge move as I speak.
pavucontrol is the device chooser' and more.

Re: microphone doesn't work in linux skype
Success!(at least with the skype online echo/sound test.)
In System Settings-Sound-Input the only choices are in Connector and they are Analog Line-In, Front mike and Rear mike
Rear mike works
Thanks again for your help.

Holding to the proverb that the reward for accomplishment is another task, have you noticed my post about my printer driver installation problem?

Hi all,
After the mike worked on the skype online echo/sound test, I made a call and it worked there as well.
My satisfaction was marred, however, by the camera not working. So now I'm off to another post on the canera.

Thanks for your response.
I solved the problem based on help from smr54.
