F17 Kernel Tainted

Hi,

I'm running F17 x86_64 KDE Spin on my computer. This is the output of
Code:
uname -a
Code:
Linux Kitchi 3.5.3-1.fc17.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Aug 29 18:46:34 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux
Everytime I switch my wireless on and off using the hardware switch (Fn + F2) abrt pops up telling me my kernel has been tainted.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

If you load a non-GPL or proprietary driver into the kernel it becomes 'tainted' and this information is (why?) presented to the user for some reason. Maybe you loaded that driver from the OEM website or from rpmfusion, but it didn't come from the Fedora repo. It is very important wrt to copyright law and your legal ability to redistribute the kernel in that state - but its mostly a "don't care for end-users.

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

Well, I dunno. My wireless + hardware switch were working before I setup rpmfusion/any third part repo on my computer. So technically this shouldn't be happening. Although I did enable the fedora non-free components during install. Could that be causing this?

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

Look in /var/log/messages and dmesg and see what module is tainting the kernel. Then you can figure out the why

dmesg | grep taint
cat /var/log/messages | grep taint

One of those should give you a clue as to what is tainting the kernel.

There are several kernel modules that can taint the kernel, I believe virtualbox is one, and some of the wireless network modules, nvidia and amd/ati drivers, etc...

So it looks like Network Manager and 'swapper' are tainting the kernel. Is swapper the process that utilizes swap space?
Is this a problem? What exactly does it mean to 'taint' a kernel?

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

No, swapper is not what utilizes swap space.

It is the kernel swapper, which basically delegates CPU time between runnable processes.

Tainting a kernel means there are modules loaded that don't have a proper GPL license, like possibly a binary only module. The license is checked when the modules are loaded, and of it doesn't have a proper license, then /proc/sys/kernel/tainted is OR'd to set it to a non-zero value.

It doesn't affect how the kernel works, really, but you will have a harder time getting bugs fixed from the developers if you are running a tainted kernel. They will tell you to remove the tainted module first, then if you still have problems, file a bug.

Those messages you show above don't really tell what tainted the kernel, just that the kernel has been tainted.

try the same thing using grep -i instead (grep is case sensitive)

dmesg | grep -i taint
cat /var/log/messages | grep taint

Look for a message similar to xxxxxxx taints the kernel

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

So the message is just telling me that swapper is reading a 'tainted' module in the kernel?

I ran
Code:
dmesg | grep -i taint
and
Code:
sudo cat /var/log/messages | grep -i taint
but I didn't get any message that looks similar to " xxxxxxx taints the kernel "

I'm posting the logs anyway.
Code:
[krishna@Kitchi ~]$ dmesg | grep -i taint

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

More likely NetworkManager loaded a wireless module that tainted the kernel.

Another common module are proprietary video modules.

swapper can't do it as it is built into the kernel.

The message only gives the state of the kernel.

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

I agree. it probably is a wireless module, but usually there is some message (other than abrt) when it gets loaded stating that it is tainting the kernel.

I believe the 3 most common one in Fedora are wireless modules, nvidia/ati video driver modules and virtualbox modules.

Did the abrt message by chance tell you what tainted the kernel, or just that your kernel is tainted?

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

Something quite strange just happened. I rebooted my machine this morning, and when I tried to reproduce the bug, I couldn't! I haven't updated my system since the last reboot, so it can't be that.

I'll check this again later today and update you guys.

--
I deleted the abrt log once I saw it, since I didn't really understand what it meant and abrt told me that these weren't file-able bugs. But if I do see it again, I'll post it here.

Thanks!

I did manage to reproduce the problem - And this is what abrt said :

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

Well, it appears you aren't alone there.

I found three three bugs filed on the same thing.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852540
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=810657
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849478

Found a bug pertaining to the top one as well:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=788012

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

Right... thanks!

I'll just hope that someone figures out how to fix this, then.

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

I haven't looked on the kernel bug zapper to see if it's shown there or not. It's possible there is a fix, but just not back ported to the kernels Fedora uses.

Re: F17 Kernel Tainted

So I'll go look there over the next few days whenever I can, and post back here.
