Gnome 3 broken/will not start

This was working but I was trying to remove a logical volume that was home for /usr. I had remove my swap logical volume first so that I could add some of the space to the root logical volume. Once I had enough space on root I copied all /usr files over to root.

Now when I boot my display stops at the init sequence (I think it is the init sequence?). It stops at the bottom of what this file boot.log shows. I have a mouse prompt and I can move it but no more then that. I have access to all virtual terminals.

Thanks

P.S. Why do I have to shorten my posts? I get the error "Post denied. New posts are limited by number of URLs it may contain and checked if it doesn't contain forbidden words." if I do not.

edit, added because of the "Post denied error"

It doesn't work like that. There's already an X server running. Try

Code:
startx -- :1

george_toolan, thanks for trying to help out.

I did
Code:
$ startx -- :1
and all I got was a black screen with a mouse pointer.

Code:
# cat /var/log/messages | tail -n 21

Sounds like a sure recipe for screwing up all the paths on your system. A place for everything and everything in its place. I can't imagine something like this working.

Re: Gnome 3 broken/will not start

LongTimeDabbler, is your comment suppose to help? How do I "unscrew" it?

I at least made backups of everything, and the only thing that appears to be broken is the GUI.

I was trying to fix the below issue
Code:
# dmesg | grep usr
[ 15.078190] systemd[1]: /usr appears to be on its own filesytem and is not already mounted. This is not a supported setup. Some things will probably break (sometimes even silently) in mysterious ways. Consult http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/separate-usr-is-broken for more information.
I removed the lv for swap so that I could free up some space, then copied the /usr lv to the /usr directory in the rootfs. Commented out the mount point for /usr in /etc/fstab and reboot. But no GUI :-(

OK - I guess I didn't follow you correctly. I had thought you had done something that would have altered that paths of everything under /usr. So based on what you say here all the paths should be the same. Dumb question but you don't have something like /usr/usr/foo instead of /usr/foo?

no its not a dumb question, I would hate to go through trouble shooting to find such a simple mistake

Re: Gnome 3 broken/will not start

http://www.finkproject.org/doc/x11/trouble.php
(This is mac related but might still be helpful)

_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already
running
Class: Fatal. This can happen when you accidentally run several instances of XDarwin at once, or maybe after an unclean shutdown (i.e. crash) of XDarwin. It might also be a file permission problem with the sockets for local connections. You can try to clean that up with rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix. Restarting the computer also helps in most cases (Mac OS X automatically cleans up /tmp when it boots, and the network stack is reset).
