Re: Laptop recommendation for specific requirements

I appreciate your sensibility to drop the optical drive. These are a PITA, they don't last and it's ridiculously expensive to replace a laptop DVD. Given that I use one ~4 times a year on laptop I'd rather plugin a $30 USB model..

My personal concern with a Samsung is the KB. You may want to try one to see how that KB feels under your fingers.

You're on the right track with the Intel video on laptops. Less heat, no proprietary drivers, better integration and less weight.

Re: Laptop recommendation for specific requirements

There are both Intel vs ATI vid models of the Samsung 700 (same suffix I think!).

I used to believe that Nvidia was better supporting of Linux than ATI - but they both seem to massively not-care. Only Intel is playing in the right ballpark, but their performance is weak (tho' improving steadily).

Re: Laptop recommendation for specific requirements

Thanks again for all the responses. Actually I haven't found a samsung 700 model which would only come with an integrated graphics chip, the ATI chip it seems is mandatory.

Since now I try avoiding ATI I came up with Lenovo U410. This is suboptimal in that it has an nvidia graphics chip (an integrated would be fine) but otherwise it seems okay.

Anyone has F17 experiences on Lenovo U410?

Re: Laptop recommendation for specific requirements

A quick google indicates some (probably solvable) issues with UEFI.

Seems to describe it well.

Re: Laptop recommendation for specific requirements

Yes, that's what I found too.
UEFI and disk problems but all reports are on ubuntu and the solutions are also ubuntu-specific as far as I can tell (installing/removing ubuntu packages).
I guess I'll start a new thread
