How to make grub on F17 (uefi w/ grub 1) boot windows 7 (uefi)?

Hello people,

I built a new computer capable of UEFI. Just like I always did, I installed windows 7 64-bit first, hoping that Fedora will pick it and make a line in boot menu.

So I installed windows in UEFI mode. Then put Fedora 17 64-bit and also made sure that I start it in UEFI mode via bios boot shortcut. It installed just fine, but there's no windows option in grub.

I have also noticed that Fedora 17 installed with grub 1/grub legacy.

I have googled for hours and tried all sort of things. The last 'most successful' attempt was adding:

title windows
root (hd0,0)
chainloader /EFI/microsoft/BOOT/bootmgfw.efi

to the /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.conf file.

It initiates windows load, but then immediately results in some windows error 0xC000000F (unexpected error has occurred).

At this point I don't know what to do to make GRUB my primary bootloader and have windows on it.

Has anyone had successful experience setting both windows and F17 in UEFI and had boot entry for windows in grub? Can anyone help?

As far as I know, grub legacy doesn't handle UEFI booting, so while Fedora may boot fine with the BIOS shortcut, it might have trouble booting other things. I'm surprised that it got installed as I thought it was removed from the installation media.

I'd install grub2 and then try adding the Windows entry through there.

Thank you for replying, Angryfirelord. Yeah, I'm not sure why, but apparently GRUB 1 is installed automatically in F17 when DVD is booted in UEFI mode.

Also I've given up on UEFI, too many troubles in both Fedora and windows. So I installed everything the usual BIOS way and everything is dandy now. I guess it's too early to use UEFI full time yet.

My advice to other people going through same thing is to stick with BIOS for now and make your life much, much easier.

Hmm, it seems Grub legacy is still packaged with Fedora. I only use the LiveCD for installs. In addition, Fedora does provide their own patched version of it for EFI booting.

In any case, if you do want to try it again, there is a grub2-efi package in the repositories.
