Fetchmail and irssi failing to resolve DNS on first call

I get quite an annoying failure with fetchmail and irssi (possibly other networking apps but these two are the ones where it is the most obvious).

When I call fetchmail, I get the following error:

Code:
$ fetchmail -v
fetchmail: 6.3.21 querying pop.mail.yahoo.fr (protocol POP3) at Fri 10 Aug 2012 10:58:55 PM CEST: poll started
fetchmail: couldn't find canonical DNS name of pop.mail.yahoo.fr (pop.mail.yahoo.fr): Name or service not known
fetchmail: 6.3.21 querying pop.mail.yahoo.fr (protocol POP3) at Fri 10 Aug 2012 10:58:56 PM CEST: poll completed
fetchmail: Query status=11 (DNS)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 11
And when I run exactly the same command immediately later, or just a minute later (I don't know the exact time limit), it works just fine.

I tried many times, it's always the same. I must run it once, let it fail, and run it again. That's weird.

Any idea about what is going wrong?

Re: Fetchmail and irssi failing to resolve DNS on first call

I'd like to add that it's exactly the same with git. First attempt results in DnS failure. And when I try just after, it works fine.

I should mention also that when I ping say google.com it works fine straight on.

That's very weird.

Re: Fetchmail and irssi failing to resolve DNS on first call

Its likely your DNS server - the first one listed in /etc/resolv.conf (text file).
I suggest you write a script to test that or change the dns servers from your network configs.

Re: Fetchmail and irssi failing to resolve DNS on first call

Thanks. So I added two "nameserver" lines in /etc/resolv..conf, using primary and secondary DNS servers IPs given by my internet provider. I let the local IP of my router (192.168.1.1) as third line just in case.

Seemed to work better, at least for name resolution, as I got some "connexion refused", so I've made some other changes (static IP for instance) and now everything seems to work fine.
