Maybe but I can't help but think that's also a, shall we say, "diplomatic" way of them saying they dont want to ship Gnome 3 as default.

I can understand it, a couple years ago even when Gnome 2 was still around I always felt Xfce could become the "new" Gnome 2 or at least a great alternative since it was improving and getting a lot of the same key features.

Xfce does seem to be a bit more "universal" than Gnome 3 so for Debian I agree it's probably a good fit as the default.
