itunes compatible application?

I want to switch the OS on my main machine from Win8 (beta) to Fedora, but I would be losing my iTunes, which I use to sync my music, photos and apps to/from my phone.

Are there any applications that could replace itunes, or a way (preferably without the use of "wine") to get itunes to work under Linux?

O.K. I am going to take a shot at this one. I was using PinguyOS the other day and saw that there was an application called gtkpod - http://www.gtkpod.org/wiki/Home - which is said to work with Apple ipod. It is also available in the Fedora repository.

GtkPod works fine with my ipod nano.

Don't understand why ipods need to be so complicated, why can't they just work as USB mass storage like everything else does?

Apple has to control everything. That's how they avoid getting viruses (as compared to Android devices).

As far as GTKPod, it looks good and everything, except it doesn't work with my media library, which is located on another computer, and mounted under /media/music - not sure why it doesn't work, but guessing it's because of the "network path" mounting.

Anyway, GTKPod won't work with an iPod Touch, Apple encrypts the index file for all the media on the device and the OS won't search the files, it only uses the index.

iTunes also doesn't run under wine. I had to build a Win7 VM just to run iTunes so I could manage me Touch.

For my nano I just use RhythmBox. It sees the iPod when I plug it in and I can drag music in and out of it.

My daughter has no problem with her ipod using Amarok which inmho and hers is far superior than itunes. She's 20 and tech savvy as that generation are It is a kde application but works under gnome as well. As for videos and photos, I'm not so sure but if you try a livecd to see if things work that will give you some indication (remember though that this will run far slower than a hard-drive install. Also you could consider dual booting, which means you install Linux alongside windows and can choose at boot which you want to use. Or you could (if you have enough ram) virtualise Windows inside Linux.

I won't go into specifics of how to do these things as there will be howto's elsewhere in the forum, but this gives you some choices so that you can get the most out of your device and still use Linux

I concur with brunson, itunes (ipod touch) will not work with wine, you will have to create a virtual (windows) machine, this is also the advice provided by the piss poor apple "helpline"

I can't say from experience because I don't have an Ipod and I've never used Itunes. But I've heard Yamipod is a good itunes alternative.

search google for 'Yet another Ipod Manager' and it should be one of the top searches.

Banshee might handle music and video, but I don't think you'll find anything that will handle apps. VirtualBox + Windows install might be your best bet.
