gdm fails to start with external monitor

If I have my external monitor attached to DVI I can just see the background image on the laptop and the external monitor stays black, no gdm login or anything. Without the external monitor everything is normal and I can login, then connect the external monitor and it remembers my setting to extend the desktop.

Code:
Linux disi-bigtop 3.5.0-2.fc17.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 30 14:48:59 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
This is with the radeon driver and the default configs in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, which has just 00-system-setup-keyboard.conf.

Attached is the Xorg.o.log with external monitor connected to DVI, looks normal to me...

Any other information you need, let me know

Re: gdm fails to start with external monitor

Are you using both monitors at once? Usually GDM should work if only one monitor is active when the system is booted. Otherwise perhaps try changing
Code:
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "Monitor0"
	VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
	ModelName "Monitor Model"
EndSection
to
Code:
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "Monitor X"
	VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
	ModelName "Monitor Model"
EndSection
where "X" is the ID of your second monitor, and delete all other "Monitor" sections maybe.

I have no monitor sections and no other configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ as stated above. I think per default the screens should be mirrored on login and gdm therefore on both screens, but I just see the background on one of them (LVDS) and nothing on the other.
Yes, it works if I disconnect the external monitor, which I use as a workaround to connect it after login.

Re: gdm fails to start with external monitor

I pasted inn everything in my xorg.conf.
If there is something of interest pick that.
Discard the rest.

I use 2 monitors with 2 video cards.
I use KDM and it works well.

Re: gdm fails to start with external monitor

Thanks for the config, looks like nvidia. To be honest, I want RandR to work properly with the open radeon driver and gdm to start.
With vmlinuz-3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64 I have the exact same behaviour, but it worked when I first installed Fedora ~2 days ago. Must have come with an update and it doesn't appear to be the kernel driver in 3.5?

Here is another scenario:
boot with the external monitor connected
just the background image and mouse pointer, where gdm should be
disconnect it and restart Xorg (ctrl+alt+bksp)
gdm comes up and I can login
wait for Gnome to start
connect the external monitor and I get a kernel oops (tested twice)

p.s. its not a big deal, since I have a workaround, I just thought I would ask if this is a known problem...

Kernel "oooops" is something you probably will not see if you change to kde. Gnome 3 was a nightmare with dual monitors for me. I gave it up. No big deal since I hated it.
