Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
Where does the install halt?
How do you start the install process? CD/DVD or USB stick?
If you use live media - have you tested that it works on any other computer?
More info please.
If you intend to use linux besides windows, you must first in windows shrink your NTFS partition with windows own disk resizing tool.
If linux is intended to be the only system then go for the newest Fedora 17 64bit edition in either KDE or Gnome. I prefer KDE.

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
So in your BIOS the boot sequence is set to USB or CD first?
Do you have any system working on this PC now at all?
Can you at all start the live media?
It should be a quite good pc you have.

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
Are you using the 'full' DVD install, or a LiveCD? If a LiveCD, which spin are you using?
I'm stabbing in the dark a little here, but maybe you'd have more luck using one of the 'lighter' desktop environments? My preference is Xfce, though LXDE works well too

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
The 'spin' is the type of OS that's on it - the 'default' version has Fedora with the Gnome3 desktop; you can also get versions with the KDE, Xfce and LXDE desktops on them. Beyond that, there's a gaming spin (comes with tons of games installed), a robotics spin (comes with lots of robotics-centric packages installed) and so on. You can choose desktop spins here - as I said, Xfce and LXDE are both lightweight, so maybe you'll have more luck with them.
In the meantime, don't give up just yet - other people should be along to help; I'm just not very experienced with problems so I can't offer too much advice

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
Just to get a little more detail; when you select "Start Fedora 17" you just get a black screen? There isn't a 'loading bar' or anything like that? How long do you wait for this screen to change before you switch off or restart?
Usually when you boot, you get what's called the 'Plymouth' loading screen (which should be there instead of your blank screen) - if you press F12 while that's screen's displayed, you get a blinking cursor at the top-left of the screen and then text on the monitor instead (listing which packages the OS is starting etc). Does pressing F12 (and waiting a little bit) make any difference? That might at least tell us why it's not booting correctly, as it could display an error message.
Another one I'd try is selecting 'troubleshooting' from the menu, and trying 'start in basic graphics mode'. Again, I'm not certain it'll make a difference, but that's the next step I'd try!

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
As asked above; at what point does the install fail? If you can be as specific as possible about what you see, it helps a lot

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
the installation fails right after I click "start fedora 17" it just goes black screen, and ive waited over an hour. ive also tried start in basic graphics mode and a memory test. the live cd that im using works, ive tried it on my desktop (the one im using right now). this is the screen right before it goes blank

Re: can't install any linux on my laptop
Does the machine have EFI firmware? When you get to that screen, don't press enter or let it time out, press the "any" key and edit the kernel command line to include " noefi", then try booting it.
