FC17 bootloader error on install

Hi all,

I'm trying to install FC17 on a machine and I keep geting a bootloader error at the end of the install. Then when I reboot, it drops me to a grub prompt. I had FC14 installed on this machine before with no problem. Some details below

installed from: usb cd/dvd drive
Install: FC 17 with minimal install
Disk: one disk only. I partition as sdb2="2G of swap" and sdb1="/ rest of disk"

I also tried using a /boot partition but it didnt make any difference.

As a experiment I tried something else. I let Fedora choose the disk partitioning and it used a LVM and made the partitions its own sizes. This ended up working with no problems. I cant use a LVM for this though. Anyone have a solution that doesnt include "Just use a LVM"?

My first question about this would be - what image are you using?

Since you say when anaconda does the partition by itself the installation works, are you by any chance installing to a GPT - disk?

One of the "solutions" to this problem as reported in some other thread, was to wipe the HD clean before installing .... there were more threads on the same issue actually.

Re: FC17 bootloader error on install

I'm going to see if I can find the fix - this just came up last week or so here, with the answer (I had the same thing happen; as I recall it's a bug).

Yup - in Installation forum "Boot loader failing to install", Stoat posted what worked foe me - about 3/4 the way down - his suggestion being:

su
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
grub2-install /dev/sda

{of course, whichever sd? you have)

Standard FC17 64 bit DVD release.

Tried the wipe and it still didnt work after. Same results as before.

After a install, I booted into a shell using the FC17 DVD and then chrooted into the /mnt/sysimage directory. I then tried the above commands (got no errors) and rebooted. Still the same. Drops me to the grub prompt. I know it isnt bad hardware because I tried it on other machines with duplicate hardware and get the same issue.
