Can't transfer files FROM Linux TO Windows...

No matter what Linux distro I use, I can't transfer files to Windows 7. I am currently on Fedora 17. Basically, what happens, is the files just don't show inside Windows. And then when I log back on in Linux, they are gone from the Windows partition. I know they transferred because it completed.

If you need any commands run, just let me know. Here are the ones I think might be relevant...

cody@cody-pc ~$ sudo yum install ntfs-3g

* rpmfusion-free: mirror.web-ster.com
* rpmfusion-free-updates: mirror.web-ster.com
* rpmfusion-nonfree: mirror.web-ster.com
* rpmfusion-nonfree-updates: mirror.web-ster.com
* updates: mirrors.usc.edu
Package 2:ntfs-3g-2012.1.15-1.fc17.x86_64 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do

Any others? Thanks for any help!

Re: Can't transfer files FROM Linux TO Windows...

One easy way to do it is to grab winscp for Windows. I believe you can get a binary that doesn't require installation, an exec file just sits on the desktop. (I think--that part isn't guaranteed.)

Then, from the Windows machine, you can use it to get into the Linux machine.

As for the samba issues, not sure. There are several things that can go wrong with samba. For what it's worth, I have a dated page about it, with some possibly useful links to the samba docs troubleshooting section.

I think I'll try the first option first. It has to do with a backup I made for game development :P

Thanks! Hope it works!

Re: Can't transfer files FROM Linux TO Windows...

Are you certain the Windows partition was mounted when you copied the files?

If it's not mounted, then you copied the files into the directory specified for the mountpoint instead of copying them onto the Windows partiton. Then when the partition was mounted in linux, you can't access the files since the Windows partition is mounted over the directory you copied them into.

umount the Windows partiton in linux and see if your files are in the directory you mounted it to.
