Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

Fedora 17 should find a NETGEAR N600 Wireless USB Adapter, WNDA3100, during startup en later. The dongle show no activity. Consequently no connection.

The drivers are in /lib/firmware, ar9170-1 and ar9170-2. Apparently not loaded or in the kernel.

The command dmesg | grep firmware or NETGEAR or anything els gives no information.

Is there anybody who can help me to activate the wireless networking with this dongle ?

Greetings

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

Try

dmesg | grep ADDRCONF

and post that output here, as well as the output from:

lspci

Ok, so you need the Broadcom drivers and from what I can find on the internet right now you will probably need to use ndiswrapper.

This is the give-away line from lsusb:

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0846:9011 NetGear, Inc. WNDA3100v2 802.11abgn [Broadcom BCM4323]

Do you have any experience using ndiswrapper? There are lots of guides around for that.

This link from the arch linux page indicates that it should work with the specific ID you have above.

Here's another page/guide that may help you with ndiswrapper and the BCM4323.

I have no experiene with ndiswrapper. It is downloadled.

A tar-file is found with a numer of bcm43xx drivers. It ooks me that bcm4323 is not there.

Ndiswrapper with the tar-ball will be installed.

Hopefulley it will work

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

Two actions performed to get wireless networking.
Ndiswrappper is installed and it is attempted to have the correct driver.

1.
First ndiswrapper is installed

[root@pc fedora]# cd ndiswrapper-1.58rc1
[root@pc ndiswrapper-1.58rc1]# ls
AUTHORS driver loadndisdriver.8 ndiswrapper.8 README
ChangeLog INSTALL Makefile ndiswrapper.spec utils
[root@pc ndiswrapper-1.58rc1]# make install
make -C driver install
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/ruud/fedora/ndiswrapper-1.58rc1/driver'

/sbin/depmod -a 3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64

make -C utils install

install -m 755 ndiswrapper /usr/sbin

mkdir -p -m 755 /usr/share/man/man8
install -m 644 ndiswrapper.8 /usr/share/man/man8
install -m 644 loadndisdriver.8 /usr/share/man/man8
[root@pc ndiswrapper-1.58rc1]#

2.
Drivers are copied from the netgear-disk and stored in ProgramFiles (x64) of Windows 7.
[root@pc WIN764]# ls
bcmh43xx64.cat bcmihvui.dll bcmwlhigh6.sys
bcmh43xx.cat bcmwlcoi64.dll WdfCoInstaller0100964.dll
bcmihvsrv64.dll bcmwlcoi.dll WdfCoInstaller01009.dll
bcmihvsrv.dll bcmwlhigh664.sys
bcmihvui64.dll bcmwlhigh6.inf
[root@pc WIN764]#

3.
Driver installation in the directory with alle the needed information including the.inf file
[root@pc WIN764]# ndiswrapper -i ./bcmwlhigh6.inf
installing bcmwlhigh6 ...
[root@pc WIN764]# ndiswrapper -l
bcmwlhigh6 : driver installed
device (0846:9011) present
[root@pc WIN764]# depmod -a && modprobe ndiswrapper && ndiswrapper -m
adding "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" to /etc/modules.conf ...

4.
ndiswrapper is loaded

[root@pc WIN764]# lsmod
Module Size Used by
ndiswrapper 279146 0
lockd 84836 0
sunrpc 235511 1 lockd
etc.

5.
vi /etc/modules.conf

alias wlan0 ndiswrapper
alias wlan0 ndiswrapper

6.
No wireless option in network manager

7.
Find out the correct driver
[root@pc fedora]# lsusb | grep -i netgear
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0846:9011 NetGear, Inc. WNDA3100v2 802.11abgn [Broadcom BCM4323]
[root@pc fedora]#

Apparantly not

8.
Two tar-balls are downloaded and none of them have the driver [Broadcom BCM4323]
9.
Tried to use b43-fwcutter to install the downloaded broadcomwl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2 packed after extracting the files does not work b43-fwclutter is not the correct command.

b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta.

10.
The problem is now the correct [Broadcom BCM4323] driver.

Is there anybody who can help me for this driver ?

Thanks

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

if anything like my wna3100 which uses bcmwlhigh5.inf you can install ndiswrapper from the rpm fusion repos (if installed just
Code:
su -c 'yum install ndiswrapper'
then in terminal
Code:
cd /wherever bcmwlhigh6.inf is located
Code:
su -c 'ndiswrapper -i bcmwlhigh6.inf'
Code:
su -c 'ndiswrapper -ma'
then you need to add a text file named ndiswrapper.conf to /etc/modules-load.d with the text "ndiswrapper"

Thats how i got mine to work! much easier than previous kernels where we needed to patch ndiwrapper to be able to install the bcm modules. good luck and hope that helps

---------- Post added at 05:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:27 PM ----------

oh and if you dont have a windows install to copy the bcmwlhigh6.inf and .sys then just google them and they should pop up

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

As suggested by others the next actions are taken.

Ndiswrapper is installed. Driver is installed. See lbelow.

[root@pc ruud]# lsmod | grep ndiswrapper
ndiswrapper 279146 0
[root@pc ruud]# ndiswrapper -l
bcmwlhigh6 : driver installed
device (0846:9011) present

De file modules.conf is written in /etc. See below

[root@pc /]# cd /etc
[root@pc etc]# cat modules.conf
alias usb:v0846p9011d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* ndiswrapper
alias usb:v0846p9020d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* ndiswrapper
[root@pc etc]#

Thers is still no wireless connection. NetworkManager should show a menu with a choice for a wireless connection

Second problem.
In spite of the insmod/modprobe /depmod command it appaers that after restart ndiswrapper is not in the kernel as can found out with lsmod.

The actions above are repeated with no result.

Any other suggestions/remarks are much appreciated.

Greetings

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

try
Code:
su -c 'modprobe -v ndiswrapper'
the -v should tell if theres a problem loading the module for some reason. the next point of call would be "se linux" in my book but would need to look up how to set exceptions.

---------- Post added at 08:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------

are you running a 64 bit os? if i remember right theres another patch needed for ndis wrapper that fixes a bug that reports a buffer over run or something in the 64 bit drivers.

---------- Post added at 08:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:40 PM ----------

although it was a while back that i was using 64 bit. so ndiswrapper may have all needed patches already in place but you will possibly need a bcm43xx-64.inf i had a lot of crashes using it though so went back to just the i686 version and have it running without any hitches at all

After restart no ndiswrapper in the kernel : lsmod doe not show ndiswrapper.

However the driver is still installed but i wireless connection.
[root@pc ruud]# ndiswrapper -l

Yes I am running a 64 bit os, downloaded from fedora website. People told me that a 32 bit os on a 64-bit machine is slower. Do you propose to install the 32 os ?
Secondly, wher can I download this bcm43xx-64.inf driver, together with the bcm43xx-64.sys drivers for the present installation ?

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

If you would, do a:

modprobe ndiswrapper

Then show us the output from:

dmesg | grep ADDRCONF

And then the output from:

dmesg | grep ndiswrapper

Thanks.

Re: Fedora 17 does not activate wireless network

ah i just forund the bcmwlhigh6 is the 64 bit driver when i was running a 64 bit os i also had the bcmwlhigh5. inf installed too i posted the link to that file if needed. if i remember both were loaded and in use when the dongle was working. although these chips are a pain to get working at the best of times and in my case "a lesson learned" I will defo do more reseearch before buying anything else.
