qtparted making NTFS partition

I'm using qtparted to try to format a brand new HDD. I want to make it a storage drive and I want to make it NTFS so that Windows knows how to read it too.

So I created a logical volume and then went to format the space within it as NTFS. It says "All operations completed" straight away and the space turns red indicating it is allocated as a NTFS partition. Then I go to COMMIT and again it says "All operations completed" straight away. But where the NTFS partition should be it now says unknown under the type column and does not save the label either. The space is also shown as white rather than red.

When I tried to make it ext3 once I hit commit the box popped up and it took a little while to process through to 100% and when it finished it remained as ext3.

Any ideas on what to do because it would be nice to have it as NTFS.

Simple, format it with Windows...

Do note however, that if you want to dual boot, NEVER let Windows suspend, since it will corrupt the disk if Linux accessed it in between.

Re: qtparted making NTFS partition

Can't do that unfortunately. I have 3HDDs. One with linux, one that I want to run storage on and the third which has a corrupted Windows (won't boot) along with some other stuff. I need to back up some of the stuff from the windows disk onto the storage disk before I format it, but can't format the storage disk because of the problem above.

If I do make it ext3 and back everything up then windows won't be able to read it when I reinstall.

EDIT: I've got it as an ext3 partition so far but I have no permissions to write to it. How do I go about giving myself permissions as user rather than root. is it:
Code:
 chown USER /dev/sdc5 ?

Re: qtparted making NTFS partition

fwiw I recently used gparted under f16 to create a ntfs formatted partition on a disk, and that partition worked fine in either windows or linux. I didn't have any problem like you're describing.

Yeah I'll give that a go. I don't need to write to it when I'm on Windows (heck I might not need to access it at all but just in case).

Also any ideas on changing the permissions?
