F17 on Ivy-bridge laptop with deactivate AMD 7970M.. fan stays on

Hi there,

I just installed F17 on my new Laptop. Ivi-Bridge HW with a dedicated HD7970M GPU.

I disabled the dedicated GPU with
Code:
[root@lapbecksfed ~]# echo "OFF" > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
[root@lapbecksfed ~]# cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
0:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0
1:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
BUT.. the fan stays on and is blowing out cold air all the time.. not to mention the noise

I plan to use the 7970 for GPGPU things later on but for normal use I would like to turn it completly off.. including the fan

Help is very appreciated!

Cheers Michael

What kind of notebook is this?

The fans are usually controlled by your systems BIOS.

Can you disable the graphics chip in your BIOS setup?

Have you tried to enable power saving before you disable the card?

Does this problem also occur if you re-enable the card before you power off the computer?

Notebook: Schenker P502 (Clevo-derivative), Ivy-Bridge with intel HD 4000 graphics

The Bios neither allows me to disable the dedicated GPU nor to select the default one.

I just figured out that if I go to "/sys/class/drm/card0/device" I do not have entries shown like
- power_profile
- power_method

I always tried to set the power-profiles _before_ disabling the GPU.
Sending "OFF" or "DDIS" to "/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch" works, in the first case the fan is slowing down and no heat is produced, but the fan isnt turned off completly (like e.g. under windows).. if I turn it one with "DDIS" it is like after a fresh boot with full fan and heat generation..

Maybe take a look at "fancontrol" and "pwmconfig" in the lm_sensors package

Re: F17 on Ivy-bridge laptop with deactivate AMD 7970M.. fan stays on

thx I will have a look at those..

on a side note.. I get the following output:

Code:
[michael@lapbecksfed ~]$ dmesg |grep VGA
[ 1.683189] fb0: VESA VGA frame buffer device
[ 4.549295] VGA switcheroo: detected switching method \_SB_.PCI0.GFX0.ATPX handle
[ 6.893162] fb: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver
Can anyone explaing to me what I am reading there?
Thx a lot!
