If gnome 3 was not as good as it is, I would switch to XFCE.

yes I am enjoying it
Beauty must certainly be in the eye of the beholder! Personally, I think the KDE desktop is much better looking. But then, I use Cinnamon! Note the spiffy, although Windows like, window list. The icons are launchers, as well.

I'm going to have to say GNOME.

It's funny, because KDE never attracted me. As much as it's been taking me a while to accept GNOME Shell (for usability), I've never been able to deny that it was an esthetical improvement over GNOME 2.

To each their own, and that's why it's great to still be able to chose from KDE, GNOME, Unity, XFCE, Cinnamon, MATE, etc... just to name a few. And this is where Linux triumphs over Windows and Mac, your not locked into one way of doing something. If the distribution takes a turn you don't like, tinker it to your taste or swtich distros.

I'll be honnest about my swtich to Gnome-Shell. I freaked out about the touch-screen interface just like most people did. I wasn't ready to accept my computer to look like a tablet. So I turned to a great deal of DE's (notably the ones listed in the previous paragraph) to find a "safe place to rest". However none of them "clicked" for me and I was always drawn back to GNOME for some reason. After many months I tried something new for the first time: Stop being hard-headed. In other words, instead of trying to make Gnome-Shell work the way I was used to using a desktop, I started using my desktop the way GNOME was intended for. And light came down from the sky! But seriously, I have since been much less frustrated with the experience. That is not to say that Gnome-Shell doesn't have it's flaws, it does. And I am sure it will finish to be just as polished as Gnome 2 was by the end of its cycle. Hell, it had almost 10 years, TEN YEARS to get to where it was at by the time Gnome 3 came along. I wasn't using Linux back then unfortunately, but I will be hard press to believe that Gnome 2.0 from 2002 was "incredibly good". Gnome 3 is still young, along with Gnome-Shell. I say give it time. Things change, it's innevitable. For those going against the change, you have choice.

This being said, I still don't think that Gnome-Shell is a suitable environment for Red Hat's systems. With Fedora being a bleeding edge test bed for new technologies, sure. But I wouldn't want to see Gnome 3 as it is now make its way to enterprise offices, with the change being too drastic. Maybe something like Cinnamon, but at the moment it still isn't stable enough. Anyways, that's a subject for another debate!

The KDE images is on a larger monitor size than the Gnome which does make a difference. I have a 14" 1024x768 screen on my laptop and have jumped between Gnome-shell, Unity, KDE and Xfce.

The amount of "dead space" is noticeable because I cannot crank up the resolution to fit more of the viewable space on the screen. As is, I try reducing the font size a point or two and that has helped make it more manageable while still readable, but it only goes so far. Usually, I find Windows managing the gaps and dead space a little better than Linux defaults.

On the rare occasion I am able to hook the laptop up to the 20" monitor, everything changes. The icons, title bar, menus, text, etc. all fits much better in the screen space. I usually find a different desktop environment works better on the large screen than on the small screen.

Xfce is the more flexible to size and adjust he work flow, KDE (non-Plasma Netbook style) looks good, but requires clicking that main menu logo space while Gnome allows me to use the entire side of the screen or the Super Key (if I had one). I haven't tried the KDE Plasma-Netbook style lately, it may be improved from when I last tried it.

Now, I'm not talking about performance or how many clicks it takes to getting somewhere, just the real estate use of the screen. Nothing like having a limited resource (screen size and resolution) to accentuate the differences.

I think the resolution limitation effects it more than the actual screen size.

Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

gave Gnome 3 another go recently. On the positive side it never crashed on me, nor did any of the apps. In the end I just couldn't adapt to it, kept adding extentions till it was usuable for me. It dawned on me that I had transformed into something far from what it was intended to be, so I just installed KDE and I am happier.

Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

I finally installed the Russian Fedora repo and gave Enlightenment 17 a try. It is blindingly fast compared to anything else I've tried, except for fluxbox and openbox. Those on minimal hardware should definitely give it a try.

Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

I had tried e17 about a year ago through the slacke17 script on Slackware and it worked nicely. I found e17 to be nice and fast but the configuration was a bit confusing and it was a bit too glossy for my taste. I attempted to try it out from the packages here http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...ment:/Nightly/, the packages installed fine and enlightenment was listed as an option in the display manager but each time I tried to login it would kick me back to the DM.

I am afraid that is my thoughts on Gnome 3. I hate it. I tried to like it, but I can't, it is slow and stupid. Gnome 2 is my favourite desktop, and that is why I am still running F14. I personally think that they should have made Gnome 3 a whole new desktop system and continued to support Gnome 2. Or better yet make Gnome 3 fully customizable so that we can make it look like Gnome 2 if we want. Maybe have a function so it can have the Gnome 2 default settings which you can customize of course but that when you pick them it makes the whole system look Gnome 2. Just my thoughts.
