Remote Desktop Screen resolution.

I want to Remote Desktop into a machine always with a resolution of 1360 x 768. When my TV (native resolution of 1360 x 768) is switched on and plugged in all is good, the machine configures the display to 1360 x 768. When I VNC to the machine I get 1360 x 768. Wonderful!

When the TV is not switched on, the machine obviously doesn't configure to it's native resolution. When I VNC to the machine, I get 1024x768 by default. Going into the "Display Preferences", 1024x768 is the highest listed. Not useful!

How can I force it to 1360 x 768 always?

If you are wondering why I am doing this. The machine will be a HTPC, when just listening to audio, it's easier to pick up the laptop and vnc in rather than turn on the TV, find the wireless keyboard etc.

Note 1: I want to control the real desktop not another VNC server instance.
Note 2: I have set up a machine which automatically logs me in (this shouldn't matter).

Re: Remote Desktop Screen resolution.

Could you specify the required geometry when you connect via vnc? Something like this

Code:
vncviewer -geometry 1360x768 host
Of course, this would be a workaround but it will solve your problem. You could even create an alias for the same.

Re: Remote Desktop Screen resolution.

Thanks but doesn't work.
The laptop generally kicking around the lounge is W7, I don't think Windows RealVNC allows you to force the resolution. When I do try it from a Linux client (CentOS 5.x) I get exactly the same behaviour e.g. 1024x768 at best.

Help!
