Re: Can't use modem USB after upgrade to F17

Apa kabar mate

I've had the same thing happened to me (used Fedora 15 for a year and had no problems. Installed Fedora 17, and get your errors).

Not sure what is going on with usb_modeswitch. Looks like it changed it's functionality going from 1.1.7 to 1.2.x (or whatever it is on F17). I also noticed that the wvdial utlity I use to dialup crashes when I run it. Note: it's the same version at the Fedora binary.

Anyway, this is how I got my Fedora 17 system going:

Uninstalled usb_modeswitch, usb_modeswitch-data, wvdial, and libwvstreams (using rpm -e --nodeps <package>)

I then installed the same packages, but from my Fedora 15 DVD:

rpm -U --nodeps usb_modeswitch-data-20110227-1.fc15.noarch.rpm
rpm -U usb_modeswitch-1.1.7-1.fc15.i686.rpm
rpm -U libwvstreams-4.6.1-3.fc15.i686.rpm
rpm -U wvdial-1.61-4.fc15.i686.rpm

You'll be able to get the above RPMs off the internet. A google will sort you out

As somebody mentioned on another forum (responding to a similar question), you probably don't need usb_modeswitch, as the USB doogle is already in modem mode... but this older version of usb_modeswitch gives udev the behaviour it expects and makes udev setup a nice /dev/gsmmodem special device.

Anyway. hope that helps

I'm using F17 with my Huawei dongle as I type

Kabarku baik-baik saja

Thx for your replay.
Are you sure those rpm can be downloaded with google??? Am I get error dependencies if I download them & installing as you mention? I can't try now cause my low connection. I'll do at internet cafe, but they use Windows.

Anyway, have you ever came to Bali or Jakarta? *I just surprised when you said "Apa kabar mate?"
Thanks a lot.

Re: Can't use modem USB after upgrade to F17

I'm guessing those RPM's are on the net (Let me have a look).

These rpm's are independant (ie: they only effect themselves), so by removing the existing (newer) libraries/applications, and installing the older libraries/apps, you aren't going to break your system.

I learnt Javanese at school when I used to live in Northern Australia (it was circumulum). It was a very ago time ago though, and I have fogotten nearly everything accept a few greetings. Never been to Indonesia. Not many indonesians in Australia to practice the langauge.

---------- Post added at 07:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:47 PM ----------

Here you go. I found them on the net (mostly on pbone, which is a good RPM site). I recommend using "wget" to download them.

ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/l...c15.noarch.rpm

ftp://ftp.muug.mb.ca/mirror/fedora/l....fc15.i686.rpm

ftp://ftp.muug.mb.ca/mirror/fedora/l....fc15.i686.rpm

ftp://ftp.muug.mb.ca/mirror/fedora/l....fc15.i686.rpm

These are small files. All of these in total are under a 1MB to download, so it won't kill your network bandwidth.

633K libwvstreams-4.6.1-3.fc15.i686.rpm
53K usb_modeswitch-1.1.7-1.fc15.i686.rpm
45K usb_modeswitch-data-20110227-1.fc15.noarch.rpm
103K wvdial-1.61-4.fc15.i686.rpm

Happy mod'ing !
