Angry Issue with Adwaita theme

For some time now I have been having to reset my cursor theme periodically as I cannot stand Adwaita. I run KDE and have absolutely no use for this theme to my mind it looks awful. However parts of it seem to be embedded in the system and occasionally it will still come back in Firefox and Thunderbird.

It is impossible to remove without removing some 200+ packages. I can understand why you have to have a default cursor theme but why on earth it has a mind of its own I just cannot fathom. I have not had this issue with my previous distros only with Fedora, on others a change of theme sticks permanently.

Can someone please explain to me how I can go about getting my system to use exclusively the cursor theme of my choosing across the entire desktop and stop it reverting to Adwaita when it feels like it. This intensely annoying.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

Just a guess. Did you install KDE on top of Fedora GNOME? Are you using GDM or KDM?

Do Firefox and Thunderbird use your GTK theme of choice properly?
What may happen is that in your theme's folder the index.theme file defines Adwaita as the cursor theme. If it's the case you could try removing that reference (or changing to your cursor theme).

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

To confirm the F16 install was a new install and I allowed both Gnome and KDE to install. i only ever use KDE.

As to the other bits I'll check...

The index.theme shows

Code:
[X-GNOME-Metatheme]
Name=qt4
Comment=Automaticaly created by GTK_KDE4
Encoding=UTF-8
GtkTheme=qt4
MetacityTheme=qt4
IconTheme=oxygen-icon-gnome
so no ref to Adwaita explicitly.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

Well I've checked ou everything suggested and still this morning Firefox switched back to Adwaita and only comes back to my setting after I switch away and back again in settings.

This is a really annoying bug, Thunderbird does it as well occasionally but not always at the same time as Firefox. FF is more prone to doing it though.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

I think I had this problem once when I tried Gnome 3 and wanted o use a left-handed pointer. sometimes it was and in other apps it wasn't. Think I used gconf-editor and searched for any references to "cursor" and set it to the theme I was using.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

Tried Gconf-editor but cant find anything which refers to Adwaita. Should point out that I have never started with Gnome since this was installed.

Now I am in a position in the near future to re-install F17 the question is can I do a fresh install and not have Adwaita install itself. I am quite happy to install KDE without Gnome as I never use Gnome and then will I be able to remove Adwaita as part of the install?

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

I would suggest that you start it into gnome, change the theme there the normal way, and then change back to kde.

BTW: try dconf-editor rather than gconf.
Easier idea will be to use gnome-tweak-tool (shows up in menus as "advanced settings").

BTW: I hate adwaita as well. NO CONTRAST between active and inactive title bars!!! You may need to INSTALL something for gnome to use besides adwaita. I use nodoka -- yum install *nodoka*.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

Well I have found a ref to dmz-aa in gconf-editor which is not installed so since adwaita is the first I have assumed it got used (partially since I only get the adwaita mouse cursor theme). I have chaged it to the one I want which is installed and will wait now to see what happens.

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

Well changing that dmz-aa to something which did exist has not fixed the issue. Ths morning both FF and Tbird came up with the wrong mouse cursors again!!!

Re: Issue with Adwaita theme

When you find an answer to this one, please be sure to post it. I have installed the white oxygen theme here, and it only works inside client windows such as FF or TB. As soon as you mouse out of the window ... the cursor reverts. Quite annoying, really.
