fedora 17 grub error 21

I've been googling but can't find any solution to this, I can only find stuff about older versions that don't work with F17. I had a new install of fedora 17 desktop on a desktop pc with only one hard drive, now the bootup is stuck saying:
Grub Loading Stage 1.5
Brug Loading, please wait
Error 21

I tried booting from the install DVD into a shell but it doesn't recognize the command 'grub-install'. I also tried the DVD troubleshooting/rescue menu but that didn't work, neither did the diagnostic menu. I also tried the DVD install menu to reload the boot loader, which it did but that didn't work. This is frustrating. I'm hoping there might be a straightforward way to repair this bootloader thing without having to reload my whole system again. Thanks for any pointers.

Offhand I'd say you have legacy grub installed. Boot with the install DVD again (rescue mode) and do grub2-install /dev/sdx (x being the partition you're booting from).
