Blu-ray drive won't start FC 17 LiveCD

I find that a LG WH12S39 Blu-ray RW drive won't start Fedora Core 17 from the LliveCD. It will boot to the point that the screen with the "Start Fedora" option appears. If that option is selected the the screen goes blank. The LED on the drive blinks but nothing happens. If the option to test the media is selected, the same thing happens. The option to test the memory works.

A simple work around was to attach a CD-RW drive in place of the Blu-ray drive. It started Fedora from the LiveCD (FC 17 64 Xfce spin). However, I'm curious if there is some simple fix that will make the Blu-ray drive work as a boot device.

That is interesting.

I would think that if you were able to get as far as you did, then it's not an issue with booting from the bluray drive.

However it is possible that it has a problem reading the CD media. Was the media burned on the bluray drive or another drive?

It was burned with a different drive, a non blu-ray DVD-RW. When I substituted the CD/DVD-RW I plugged it in the same cable that the blu-ray had been on, so there was only that hardware change.

Which brings to mind an interesting question: Is there a command that shows the type of media on a CD/DVD? (I mean whether it "plus" or "minus" - whatever the proper terminology for those media types is.)

Can the burner read the CD?
Code:
cat /dev/sr0 > /dev/null
Even better: compare with iso file to find out if the CD is read correctly
Code:
diff /dev/sr0 filename.iso
Cdrecord can display lots of information about your media. See http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/cdrecord.html

Code:
$ cdrecord -scanbus
$ cdrecord -atip dev=n,0,0 where n is your burner

book type: DVD+R, Version (10.1)
Manufacturer: 'MCC'
Media type: '004'
