Gnome 3 Can't find screensaver control

Hi Guys

Wonder if you can help me. I have just installed Fedora 17 onto my desktop having been with Ubuntu for the last few years.

I am running Gnome 3 which I like a lot but having problems trying to find the controls for the screensaver. I have installed both the Gnome screensaver package and also the Really Slick Screensavers (RSS) package.

However when I go into System Settings and look into 'Background' and 'Brightness and Lock' I cannot see any screensaver controls except for the screen lock which works fine. However I was hoping to have some cool screensavers running rather than a blank screen.

I'm sure I am being very dumb here and missing something obvious but would be very grateful for any help.

Re: Gnome 3 Can't find screensaver control

Check if you have this comman: gnome-screensaver-command --help
It seems that you can only turn the saver on/off under gnome3.(I guess)
Quote:
$ gnome-screensaver-command --help
Usage:
gnome-screensaver-command [OPTION...]

Help Options:
-h, --help Show help options

Application Options:
--exit Causes the screensaver to exit gracefully
-q, --query Query the state of the screensaver
-t, --time Query the length of time the screensaver has been active
-l, --lock Tells the running screensaver process to lock the screen immediately
-a, --activate Turn the screensaver on (blank the screen)
-d, --deactivate If the screensaver is active then deactivate it (un-blank the screen)
-V, --version Version of this application

There is no gnome-screensaver for Gnome 3, use xscreensaver instead.

Thanks for that Wayne - quickly clears that one up!
Have downloaded the xscreensaver now.

Personally think it's a pity that theyve left screensavers out of Gnome 3, but I'll cope!

Re: Gnome 3 Can't find screensaver control

Screensavers in Fedora 17 are a bit strange.

I use KDE instead of Gnome, and it took me a very long time to find which packages I need to be able to run screensavers.

I now have nine software packages installed only to use a single screensaver:
kde-artwork-active
kdeartwork
kdeartwork.kxs
kdeartwork-screensavers
xscreensaver-base
xscreensaver-extras
xscreensaver-extras-base
xscreensaver-gl-base
xscreensaver-gl-extras

I assume I could kick three or four more out, but everytime you remove one, it also takes to others with it that in turn depend on something else, and so on... ^^
