problems ati hd 7650m on f17

hi i have a few questions to ask instlling f17 on a laptop with ati hd 7650m
- the only way to install is in safe grapghic mode
- then i update and install kernel 3.4
- how can i change and load the right driver instead of vesa to see it it works? can i pass a grub option so that if it doesn t work i can simply reboot with vesa?
- which is the right name to pass on xorg.conf file for my card? ati, radeon or radeonhd
- does anybody know if it is supported at all with current kernel?
- what if i try catalist akmod at the moment?

12.6 doesn't compile against the 3.4 kernel

That's a SOUTHERN ISLANDS radeon chip. Its support was introduced with kernel 3.4

If you have to install with VESA, make sure you switch back to RADEON after updating the kernel. Check your kernel commandline and check for the presence (and delete if present) of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

After you install, UPDATE the kernel to 3.4 "yum update kernel".
DELETE /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Make sure that your kernel commandline doesn't have anything in it that will kill radeon (like an instruction to use vesa).

REBOOT.

SOLVED: with this card I have no problem if I use the 32bit version of fedora (I have even 2d acceleration to watch movies) but all the trouble comes from the 64bit version. with it, if i use vesa i get frequent freezing while using the ati driver (in the way described above, deleting xorg.conf) xorg soesn't even starts....
so I recommend for the moment to use the 32 bit version.

ps. the only weird thing is that when xor starts and I should see gdm, I get a blank screen. if i push the power button (as to shut down) the screen gets bright and I log in....

12.6 is in the f17 testing repo

The 12.6 beta will remain in the testing repo, when ati releases the final version that will be pushed to the stable repo.

That's not how it works ;-)

You're supposed to test it and then tell us if there are any unusual problems with this driver.

To install

yum --enablerepo rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing install kmod-catalyst

Knowing ATI the 12.6 release will probably be identical to this beta version.
