As for your claim saying it's unusable, that is complete ********* and you know it
Go and file a report at the cinnamon bug tracker.

It's not the top-right notification I have issue with; it's the system tray applet not displaying, and I don't think it's a skype issue (though it seems to be the only program I have that uses the system tray at present), and I can't even get a highlight to appear when I hover over it like I could in older versions.
Actually, now it appears at the bottom right just fine. It's as if the newer version of cinnamon causes the system tray to disappear when nothing's using it, which is harder to customize than the old behavior of it being really thin when there was nothing in it; reminds me of how the classic view style was unusable for some when everything became an applet, before panel edit mode was introduced.
EDIT: It's worth noting that this was after a reboot; had to go into Windows to edit a rich text document later that night.
On the padding, it looks like some things now have a minimum width set. No idea what this reset that was mentioned earlier is, as it's not the applet reset.
Afraid I can't do much with bug trackers; I'm not a software developer, so I don't have a BugZilla account, and they don't allow unregistered people to submit bugs.

I have an account and I'm not a developer. If this is the site your referring to:

You do not need to be a developer to file bugs. That's the whole point of bugzilla. Feedback from users is critical to the quality control process. Various hardware/user configuration posibilities are enormous. So, If we don't file the bugs, they can't know what needs fixed. Yes. If you wish to be taken seriously, you will have to register and become part of the community solution.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
Does anyone else get random hanging with Cinnamon? I have two computers that randomly hang and the only thing common between them is that they're running Cinnamon. My LXDE box has no issues.

Yup, my screen also hangs randomly although the system itself does not crash - I can use ALT+FX to reboot. No idea why it happens.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
I have most (not all) desktop environments installed on F16.
I have found that most of them are involved with a race condition where the window manager (the thing that takes ultimate control over the root window) doesn't start properly.
I found that xfwm4 (for instance) hangs... and allows me to manually start another without any options. Starts fine. And blocks the default (which resumes when my manually started one is terminated).
I have not identified what the hang+timeout is yet.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
I've come back to giving Cinnamon a try after a few weeks using MATE and giving Gnome 3 a second shot and I must say that Cinnamon has matured quite a bit. There are more applets than before, making the DE more customizeable and better than ever!
