No sound on Fedora 15

I just installed Fedora 15 and I'm liking it quite a bit but I have no sound output :/

My USB speakers (bose companion 5) show up in sound preferences, and I've selected them as the sound output device. And whenever an application (such as Rhythmbox) plays music, it shows up in the list of sound-outputting applications.

But there's no sound. I've checked that none of the mixers are muted (in fact all are on maximum), and my speakers are not muted either.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Switched USB ports; it's working fine now. Wacky.

Something about order of initialization? I plugged my mouse into the "offending" USB port and it works fine too.

OK, I get it, it's not about the USB port. I have to plug in my speakers AFTER Fedora boots. That's kind of annoying but bearable.

Re: No sound on Fedora 15

did you try dropping to the console and using the "alsamixer" mixers? Have to do that on mine when I boot up, because I think it has system soundcard selected or something similar, and it works perfectly (and the speakers are even louder than in windows) after that

Re: No sound on Fedora 15

Yeah I've looked through the mixers in alsamixer and they're all maxed. Still I get no sound. But unplugging and re-plugging my speakers does solve it. Strange.

It's also kind of non-deterministic. Sometimes I'll boot with sound, other times I'll have to re-plug in my speakers to get sound. Luckily USB ports on the roof of my case make this less painful than it might otherwise be.

Re: No sound on Fedora 15

You said it. My dmesg, by the way, is full of stuff like this:

Code:
[ 16.463786] ALSA sound/usb/clock.c:227: 3:1:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x1
[ 16.535000] ALSA sound/usb/clock.c:227: 3:1:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x1
[ 16.624813] ALSA sound/usb/clock.c:227: 3:1:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x1
... which I'm guessing is not unrelated to my problem.

... actually looking at the kernel source where that message is produced makes it seem kind of benign... so maybe it's not related to my problem.

have to unplug and then plug it back first to make my BOSE Companion 5 works on my Fedora 17.
