Re: Driver Ati Catalyst on Fedora 17
Okay, I reinstalled Fedora 17 and it had a kernel update to 3.4.0. After that I installed the headers and devel packages for it and downloaded the AMD 12.6 beta drivers. When it says its finished another dialog pops up and says there were errors installing. When i reboot it goes the fallback mode until I uninstall (aticonfig --uninstall) and reboot then it goes back normal with the open source drivers. I'll post my fglrx install log when i get home.

And you wont be able to use Fedora 16 on the kernel update because the kmod-catalyst drivers won't be updated for that card. So you'd have to not update so you can keep the drivers that support your card. I went through that before. NVIDIA is the way to go.
|
I am running an HD 4650 card on my Dell Studio laptop. I recently updated my F16 kernel (3.3.7-1.fc16.x86_64) and I have been using the ATi drivers. Could anyone tell me what could go wrong with this combination? My video works fine but after the updates I have noticed some weird behavior with wireless connections and bluetooth. Could this be attributable to my using the HD4650 card?
I wanted to upgrade to F17. What would be the consequences of using the default drivers as opposed to the new Ati drivers? Should I look into replacing this card?
Thanks.

This 12.4 3.4-kernel patch could be adapted.

Maybe some changes to the wifi and bluetooth code in the updates. I don't think the video drivers would mess with it. If you upgrade to F17 you'll have to use the default (Gallium) drivers which are still a work in progress. I have been using them for a while, but you won't be playing any games through WINE. Not sure about native games, but it doesn't have great 3D support like AMD's drivers do, but they want to stop supporting their older video cards (I think it was 4xxx and under? even on Windows) which is not good business.

Without a doubt. They have lost a customer here

Has NVIDIA done anything like that? I know for certain that they keep up on the kernel updates. When 3.4.0 came out I checked out the repos and there was a kmod-nvidia-3.4.0 waiting to be installed. 3 kernel updates later still no catalyst drivers. Next time I'm going for an Intel with NVIDIA graphics.

I have upgraded to F17 and the issues with wifi and bluetooth are gone. I am using the default drivers and I am completely happy with them, although I do not use WINE and don't do games.
I agree that dropping support for 4xxx and under cards is not good business. I will remember this when I am specifying new machines.
Thanks for your reply.

They're NOT dropping support for <=4xxx. They're MOVING support from worthless blob to superior OSS driver COINCIDENT with OSS driver maturity.

Are they releasing specs to help the OSS driver?

We're talking about AMD here, not NVIDIA.
They have been for YEARS, and are CONTINUING to release all applicable programming documentation, as well as being primary contributors to the driver.

What does this mean?
Will there be F17 suitable Ati Catalyst drivers for the 4650 card?
Thanks.

/RANT ON
I am not new to operating systems. I have worked with COS, UNICOS, Irix, Tru64, VMS, AIX, System V, BSD (original), various flavors of Linux, DOS, OSX, MS Windows etc. I've worked with all kinds of hardware from the iPads to workstations to Alphas to Crays to clusters.
Other than for amusement I don't understand why any regular person bothers with Fedora. The developers don't even try to release a fully functional product. Gnome 3 is a serious mess that is losing desktop share big time. Radical changes are made to subsystems without substantial accompanying documentation. I hate to say it but Microsoft does a better job.
Linux once had developers who had pride in their work. Linux is only suitable for servers and clusters because you can use a proven enterprise version or one seriously modified to work reliably.
