It didn't matter which theme I used. I had missing icons in the menu or what you can call the windows equivalent of the "start menu". I mean when you click on system, places or applications and you try to launch applications from there. (I still call that area the start menu)

can you try disable selinux. Perhaps it blocks parts of mate.

I did disable selinux at some point by doing vi /etc/selinux/config and changing the first parameter to disabled. It's one of the first things I do.

But just to clarify, the icons are all now appearing in the virtual machine after a quick reinstall. I'll probably upgrade my real machine later.

Nice feature but i can't get it working.
I did installing/enabling it with ./Mate-wallpaper-slideshow,
choose a Wallpaper folder and don't change the default values forTransitionDuration and PictureDuration

I think this is could be a "transition duration" problem, try setting it to 0.

Ok I just did an update, and it stop working.
hmm... I also notice that the caja pattern background is no longer working anymore... it could be related... since caja is the one drawing the desktop background.

then your package work.
It seems that Perberos is working to really fix mate_bg_crossfade and not disable them, but this changes aren't released for the moment.

i have few questions:
do i have to remove gnome3 before installing MATE?
will i be able to install the bluecurve mouse pointer (can't live without it)?
will i have the compiz-fusion plugins, like expo view etc.?
is there gconf-editor (or an equivalent) included in MATE?
is there a way to easily transfer my gnome2 settings from f14 to f17/MATE?
lol, i started with 2 questions and they piled up quickly.

No, mate has any conflicts with gnome

If the theme is available in fedora repo you can choose it with 'mate-appearance-properties'

For installing comiz you've to enable the mate-desktop-fedora-new-application-testing repo, here you find compiz-0.8.8 packages. For fc16 you need a versionlock.list, see this topic

If you mean gconf settings no, because mate apps have different names.
Specific applicattion settings, eg. claws, firefox, can be taken from fc14.

trying to install Mate on Fedora 17. I do this:

and after a long list of packages I get this:

libpoppler.so.18 isn't part of Fedora 17, my system has libpoppler.so.19. (It's possible that it ships with 18 and gets updated to 19, I didn't check before doing the system updates after installing.)

I further note that a bunch of packages it wants to install are labeled as for fedora 16, not 17, including the "atril" packages the error above mentions:

In the fc17 repo all packages are labeled with fc17, so I'm surprise that 'yum groupinstall MATE-Desktop' want to install fc16 packages.
And atril for fc17 is in 'mate-desktop-fedora', not iin 'mate-desktop-fedora-updates'.
Can you post the mate repo files under /etc/yum.repos.d ?
Did you make an uprade to fc17 or a fresh install?

Ah-ha! I see my problem...

I had intially (without bothering to read carefully

) pasted in a line to install mate for F16 and when it failed tried F17.

but having had a few hours sleep, and seeing your posting, made me realize I should try "yum clean all" then try again.

ok, so having gotten Mate working on F17 (for the curious, I posted about a day ago regarding my own stupid failure to do it right), it seems to be working fine.

however, every time I log in I get an error box that says:

GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject

I click OK and it goes away. AFter that, everything seems to work fine, as far as I can tell.

Clues?... thanx!
