multi-monitor problem in fedora17

hi.i have fedora 17 and when i plug my second monitor cable to connect my LCD to my laptop ,and then in display press "detect display", suddenly screen gets black and nothing works.by pressing shutdown button nothing happens while in usual times it turns off the fedora.so i have to hold it 5 econd to shut down.
if i press "monitor change" button on my laptop again it gets dark.to be honest i have neck pain and doctors told me not to put pressure on my neck.so instead of my laptop lcd i usually connect my pc lcd to laptop and use it as main monitor not as an extended workspace.
