Gnome-shell failing - failback also failing

So this is odd,
I changed a setting in nvidia-settings to twin-view and now my system only starts in failback.

to make things worse, every time I restart I get a new top and bottom bar added

Any Suggestions?

Try the nouveau driver instead of the nvidia blob?

That's gnome-panel, not the new gnome-shell, so it's running in fall-back mode. What window manager are you using? It might be worth trying Compiz instead of Metacity/Mutter (I don't know which fall-back mode uses by default).
