How to learn about GNOME 3 (F17)?
Hello,
I have just taken the plunge and installed F17. I stuck with F14 until now, for fear of GNOME 3. But I decided I had to take the plunge.
I've managed to get most things working. But now I need to learn how to use GNOME 3. I'm beginning to guess successfully, but would appreciate a user-guide/manual/tutorial.
In particular, I want to find out how to get workspaces, and how to add a shell script as a favourite application (or something like that - an icon on the old GNOME 2 panel).
I've heard about gnome-shell-extensions, but yum install gnome-shell-extensions says no such package.
Any pointers appreciated.

Re: How to learn about GNOME 3 (F17)?
to find out what shell extensions are in the repo, you can do a search on them
Code:
yum search gnome-shell-extension
That will return a list of them, with a short description.
To add a shell script to the favorites, you need to create a .desktop file for it. If you wish to to be used for only 1 user, then put the .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications (there should be some others there you can use for a template if you want.)
Here is a link to the gnome page on it, though:
http://developer.gnome.org/integrati...-files.html.en
Once you have the desktop file, it should show up in your applications overview, then you can just drag it over to your favorites.
workspaces are accessible by hitting the right side of the screen with the mouse. They slide out.

Thanks a lot.
I also found the Help application (with the Lifebelt icon) and that is proving very revealing.
I think I shall like GNOME 3.4, once i have learned it better.

Hmmmm.
Well done. Methinks a change in title is indicated here.

This thread was a huge help for me when I started out on Gnome 3. There's a lot of good tips and tricks for modifying the appearance.

One thing I haven't been able to work out yet is what the Documents Application is all about (apart from showing me all the PDFs I have recently read). I can't find any help for it.

It is basically a simple document manager that shows the user the recently used files (pdfs only?) from the documents folder. As far as I know, you need documents for using the GNOME shell search to search for files in addition to applications.

It should show other types of documents too. The main purpose of it though, is if you have on-line accounts set-up, Google Docs (and maybe others in the future) also show up, all in one place.

Oh yeah! I did miss the most important item. For some reason, mine does not show anything other than PDFs and SVGs. Anyway ...
