Question F17 vs F14 Desktop comparison

Dear all,

I'm a Desktop fan, I love to put things on my desktop. When F15 had been released, I did not like it and could not use it anymore because the Desktop was locked and to put files on it I should have cracked it.

Now, as time passed, I see Fedora 17.

Please tell me if this horrible feature is still with F17, can we put files on the desktop right after installation of a new system?

If no and again I need to crack it, then I stay with F14. If yes, I will reinstall the system to have F17 of course.

Thank you.

P.S.: are there any reasons to switch the system, is F17 really better?

F14 is no longer supported. There are no new security updates, no support for newer versions of applications.

I still haven't finished downloading F17, but almost certainly desktop icons are still disabled by default. The "crack" is not exactly difficult though: it's the very first option in gnome-tweak-tool, or the dconf-editor key org.gnome.desktop.background.show-desktop-icons...

In addition, extensions.gnome.org provides a large set of customization for Gnome Shell. One of them is called Panel-Docklet giving you the legacy Gnome 2 appearance.

I am using Cinnamon with Fedora 16 for some time, and it is the best desktop experience I have ever had. It is both modern and agile, and does not dumb down my i7 machine to a phone.

Well, you can't put them on the desktop right after installing, but you're close.

First you have to install gnome-tweak-tool. Then there's a setting in there that allows the file manager to handle the desktop. Turn that on and you're ready to go.
